Basic dates: Discussing birthdays

💬 快到了 (kuài dào le) means "almost here", and the pattern is 快 + verb + 了: 快好了 "almost ready".

🇹🇼 The ending 耶 (ye) is very Taiwanese and adds a lively, friendly surprise. You'll hear it constantly in casual chat.

💬 過 (guò) "to pass, to spend" is the everyday verb for celebrating occasions: 過生日 "celebrate a birthday", 過年 "celebrate New Year".

💬 跟 (gēn) "with" plus a person goes before the action, not after it as in English: 跟朋友去吃 means "go eat with friends".

🇹🇼 Hot pot is a hugely popular birthday and group meal in Taiwan, even in summer. Many places do all-you-can-eat or individual pots.

💬 Two verbs can be stacked with no word between them, so 去 + 吃 means "go eat". Swap in another activity, as in 去看電影 "go see a movie".

💬 The order is person, wish, who with, then the action: 我 + 想 + 跟朋友 + 去吃火鍋. Keep that order and swap pieces freely.

🇹🇼 Asking a peer's age is fairly normal in Taiwan, since it helps settle who's older. With elders or superiors, people use the politer 您多大年紀？ instead.

💬 There's no verb here: number + 歲 (suì) works on its own as a full answer. Note that 28 is 二十八, never 兩十八.

💬 Time words like 今年 (jīn nián) can sit right before a noun to describe it: 今年夏天 "this summer", 去年生日 "last year's birthday".

💬 了 (le) right after the verb marks the action as done. 什麼 (shén me) stays at the end where the answer would go.

🇹🇼 掰掰 (bāi bāi), from English "bye-bye", is the everyday goodbye in Taiwan for all ages. 再見 sounds more formal by comparison.

💬 聯絡 (lián luò) means "to contact, keep in touch", and 再 (zài) means "again", so it's literally "contact again".
