Lesson Vocabulary & Phrases
請問
qǐng wèn
May I ask
💬 Put 請問 in front of almost any question to make it polite, like 請問廁所在哪裡? "Excuse me, where's the restroom?" You'll hear it constantly from both staff and customers.
See breakdown →有什麼需要
yǒu shén me xū yào
Is there anything you need
為您服務
wèi nín fú wù
To serve you
💬 您 (nín) is the respectful form of 你 (nǐ) "you". It's used for customers, elders and strangers you want to honor.
See breakdown →請問有什麼需要為您服務的嗎?
qǐng wèn yǒu shén me xū yào wèi nín fú wù de ma
How may I help you?
🇹🇼 This is the stock phrase restaurant staff use when they pick up the phone or greet you at the counter. You don't need to match its formality. Just say what you want, such as 我想訂位 "I'd like to make a reservation."

zhè gè lǐ bài liù
This Saturday
💬 禮拜 (lǐ bài) is the everyday way to say "week" in Taiwan. Add a number for the day: 禮拜一 is Monday, 禮拜六 is Saturday. Sunday is 禮拜天 or 禮拜日.
See breakdown →晚上七點
wǎn shàng qī diǎn
7 pm
💬 Chinese puts the part of the day before the clock time, from big to small. So it's 晚上 "evening" + 七點, and likewise 早上九點 "9 am" or 中午十二點 "12 noon".
See breakdown →位子
wèi zi
The table
💬 位子 (wèi zi) literally means "seat" but is the normal word for a table at a restaurant. 子 here is said lightly, with no tone.
See breakdown →還有位子嗎?
hái yǒu wèi zi ma
Are there any seats left?
💬 Put 嗎 at the end of any statement and it becomes a yes/no question, with no change in word order. Adding 還 (hái) gives the sense of "still" or "any left", so 還有票嗎? means "Are there any tickets left?"
See breakdown →這個禮拜六晚上七點還有位子嗎?
zhè gè lǐ bài liù wǎn shàng qī diǎn hái yǒu wèi zi ma
Do you still have a table this Saturday at 7 pm?
💬 The time goes first, from big to small: day, then part of day, then hour. After that comes the question. You can swap in any slot, like 明天中午十二點還有位子嗎? "Any seats tomorrow at noon?"
