Lesson Roleplay
Imagine you're calling a small family restaurant in Italy. You want to book a table for four people this weekend.
Trattoria da Gino, buonasera, mi dica.
Trattoria da Gino, good evening, how can I help you?
Buonasera, volevo sapere se avete un tavolo per quattro sabato sera, verso le otto e mezza.
Good evening, I wanted to know if you have a table for four on Saturday evening, around eight thirty.
Sabato quattordici? Un attimo che guardo... Purtroppo alle otto e mezza siamo al completo.
Saturday the fourteenth? One moment while I check... Unfortunately, at eight thirty we're fully booked.
Peccato. E un po' più tardi, tipo verso le nove e mezza, ci sarebbe posto?
That's a shame. And a bit later, say around nine thirty, would there be room?
Alle nove e mezza sì, ma solo in sala interna: la terrazza è già tutta prenotata.
At nine thirty, yes, but only in the indoor dining room: the terrace is already fully booked.
Lesson Vocabulary & Phrases
Buonasera
bwoh-nah-SEH-rah
Good evening
🇮🇹 Italians switch from buongiorno "good morning" to buonasera from mid-afternoon on, much earlier than English speakers would say "good evening".
See breakdown →Mi dica.
mee DEE-ka
How can I help you?
💬 Literally "tell me", in the polite form used with strangers. It's the standard way staff on the phone or at a counter invite you to say what you need.
See breakdown →Buonasera, mi dica.
bwoh-nah-SEH-rah mee DEE-ka
Good evening, how can I help you?
Volevo sapere
voh-LEH-voh sah-PEH-reh
I wanted to know
💬 Volevo is literally past tense, but here it softens a request rather than describing the past. Same trick: volevo prenotare "I'd like to book".
See breakdown →Avete un tavolo per quattro
ah-VEH-teh oon TAH-vo-lo pehr KWAH-troh
You have a table for four
💬 Avete is "you" plural, because you're asking the restaurant as a whole, not one person. Swap the number: per due "for two".
See breakdown →Volevo sapere se avete un tavolo per quattro
voh-LEH-voh sah-PEH-reh seh ah-VEH-teh oon TAH-vo-lo pehr KWAH-troh
I wanted to know if you have a table for four
🇮🇹 This is the standard polite opener when phoning a restaurant. It sounds more courteous than a blunt avete un tavolo?.
See breakdown →Le otto e mezza
leh OT-toh eh MED-dzah
Half past eight
💬 Clock times take le because "hours" is understood: le nove "nine o'clock". The one exception is l'una "one o'clock".
See breakdown →Verso le otto e mezza
VEHR-soh leh OT-toh eh MED-dzah
Around eight thirty
Un attimo
oon AHT-tee-moh
