Giving compliments (Advanced): Complimenting strangers

💬 型 "shape, style" is said (gata) here instead of (kata) because it's joined onto 髪 (kami): (kamigata). The same sound change happens in 血液型 (ketsuekigata) "blood type".

💬 笑顔 is 笑 "laugh" plus 顔 "face", and it's read (egao). That reading has to be memorized, since neither character normally sounds like that on its own.

💬 ちょっといいですか is literally "Is a little okay?" and works as an all-purpose "got a second?". You can put a reason in front of it, as in 質問、ちょっといいですか "May I ask a question?"

🇯🇵 This is a polite, low-pressure way to get a stranger's attention. Expect a slightly surprised look, since unprompted compliments from strangers are uncommon in Japan.

💬 ね at the end invites the listener to share the feeling, like a soft "isn't it?". Without it, 素敵です sounds like a flat statement rather than a friendly remark.

💬 The pattern is "thing + が + praise word + ですね". Swap in other things and praise words: 靴がかわいいですね "Your shoes are cute."

💬 その means "that" for something near the listener, which suits compliments about what they're holding or wearing. For something far from both of you, use あの: あのかばん "that bag over there".

💬 In casual speech the は or が after the thing often drops, replaced by a pause or comma: そのかばん、かわいいですね. You can name the item, pause, then praise it.

💬 とても "very" goes right before the praise word. Swap it in anywhere: とても素敵ですね, とてもかわいいですね.

💬 似合っています comes from 似合う (niau) "to suit", in its "-ing" form, which describes the current look. よく here means "really, well", not "often".

🇯🇵 Commenting that something suits someone praises their taste rather than their body, so it's a comfortable compliment even between strangers.

🇯🇵 Complimenting a stranger's smile is fine in service settings or friendly chats. Coming from a man to a woman on the street, though, it may feel like a pickup line.

🇯🇵 良い一日を is a translation of the English phrase and sounds a bit foreign. When parting from a stranger, Japanese speakers more often just bow or say ありがとうございました.
