Traveling between Porto and Lisbon: Taking the bus

💬 na is em + a. You'll see this constantly with places: na bilheteira, no autocarro, na estação.

💬 na is the usual way to say "at/in the" with a feminine place word: na bilheteira, na estação. For a masculine one, it becomes no: no autocarro.

💬 A que horas ...? is the standard way to ask "what time ...?" You can reuse it easily: A que horas abre?, A que horas chega?.

💬 sai means "leaves" here, from sair. Portuguese often uses the singular verb with things like buses and trains: O comboio sai às 8.

💬 às is a + as, used before clock times: às 10h30, às 8. For a singular hour, it's à: à 1.

🇵🇹 This is the natural polite answer when someone offers you a ticket or option. On its own, por favor sounds odd here; locals would normally say sim, por favor.

💬 ida e volta is the fixed expression for a return ticket: literally "outward and return." By contrast, só ida means one-way only.

💬 só means "only/just," so só ida is literally "only outward." You can reuse só in lots of travel situations: só hoje, só um bilhete.

💬 Onde é ...? can mean "where is ...?" but in station contexts it's often used for things like platforms or boarding points. A more direct place-question is also common: Onde fica ...?.

🇵🇹 For platforms, locals often ask this even though the literal English comes out as "Where is the platform?" In practice it means "Which platform is it?" and sounds normal at stations.

💬 European Portuguese often drops or weakens unstressed vowels, so Chega 15 minutos antes is said more tightly than it looks on the page. Also, antes has a clear nasal ending: an- is not like English ant.

💬 Está is from estar, used for temporary states and everyday responses like Está bem. For identity or permanent facts, you'd usually use é from ser: É o autocarro para Lisboa?

🇵🇹 In Portugal, Está bem. is a very normal way to say 'okay' or 'all right' when agreeing or acknowledging instructions. It can sound a bit more matter-of-fact than enthusiastic.

💬 Use obrigado if you're male and obrigada if you're female — the speaker changes the ending, not the person you're thanking. That same pattern shows up elsewhere: cansado/cansada.

💬 pela is a very common contraction: por + a becomes pela. The same thing happens with the other forms too: pelo, pelos, pelas.

🇵🇹 This is polite and natural with staff, drivers, or anyone who has just helped you. In Portugal, a quick Obrigado/a! is often all you need; adding pela ajuda just makes it warmer and more specific.
