Lesson Roleplay
Imagine you are at a friendly company networking event, meeting someone for the first time and asking about the company’s culture, teamwork, and whether employees are encouraged to share their ideas.
你好,很高興在今天的活動認識你。
nǐ hǎo hěn gāo xìng zài jīn tiān de huó dòng rèn shí nǐ
We value looking out for one another, like a family.
聽起來很溫暖,平常同事怎麼合作呢?
tīng qǐ lái hěn wēn nuǎn píng cháng tóng shì zěn me hé zuò ne
That sounds really warm. How do colleagues usually work together?
Lesson Vocabulary & Phrases
😊
很高興
hěn gāo xìng
Very happy; glad
💬 很 before an adjective often just makes the sentence sound complete, not strongly 'very.' You can reuse this pattern with other feelings too, like 很開心 or 很放心.
🇹🇼 This is the standard polite phrase when meeting someone for the first time in Taiwan. At a networking event, it's natural and friendly without sounding stiff.
💬 來 before another verb often means 'come and...': 來聊聊 'come chat,' 來看看 'come take a look.' The doubled verb 聊聊 makes it sound lighter and more casual than plain 聊.
🇹🇼 This sounds warm and inviting, something a company rep might say at a booth or mixer. It's friendlier and less pushy than a direct sales-style invitation.
💬 我想 often softens what you want to say, so it can mean 'I'd like to...' rather than a strong 'I want....' That's why it's useful in polite questions like 我想問一下 or 我想了解.
💬 我想 is a polite softener here, so 我想了解 sounds like 'I'd like to learn about...' rather than a blunt demand. You can reuse it with other verbs: 我想請教 'I'd like to ask,' 我想看看 'I'd like to take a look.'
💬 重視 means 'attach importance to' or 'value,' and it usually takes what is valued after it: 重視溝通, 重視效率. Here 很 doesn't need to mean 'very' strongly; it often just smooths out the phrase.
💬 照顧 can mean literal care, but with coworkers it often means 'look out for' or 'support.' So 互相照顧 sounds more like having each other's backs than caregiving.
💬 聽起來 means 'sounds' as in 'gives that impression when heard.' The pattern verb + 起來 often means 'seems/feels in that way,' like 看起來 'looks' and 吃起來 'tastes.'
💬 聽起來 is followed by how something sounds or feels impression-wise: 聽起來很有趣, 聽起來不錯, 聽起來很溫暖. It's a useful way to respond to someone describing their company.
🇹🇼 同事 is the normal neutral word for coworkers in Taiwan. In networking conversations, asking about 同事 and teamwork sounds natural and shows interest in daily work life, not just job titles.
💬 怎麼 + verb + 呢 asks 'how...?' in a softer, more conversational way. You can swap in other verbs: 同事怎麼溝通呢?平常怎麼分工呢?
🇹🇼 This is a good networking question because it asks about real day-to-day culture instead of abstract company slogans. The 呢 makes it sound gentler and more curious, which fits Taiwan business small talk well.
💬 幫忙 is often used like a verb meaning 'help out,' and it's common in Taiwan speech. You can say 幫忙一下 for 'help for a moment' or 主動幫忙 for 'help proactively.'
💬 願意 is often followed directly by another verb: 願意分享, 願意學習, 願意配合. Here 很 can simply soften and complete the phrase, not necessarily mean strongly 'very.'
💬 經驗 usually means experience in the broad sense, often work experience or lessons learned. In 分享經驗, it often means sharing know-how or what you've learned, not just telling a story.
💬 鼓勵 is often followed directly by the person and then the action: 鼓勵員工分享想法 'encourage employees to share ideas.' It's a useful verb in company culture descriptions.
💬 鼓勵 is often followed directly by the person plus what you encourage them to do: 鼓勵員工表達想法, 鼓勵大家發問. You do not need a word like "to" between 鼓勵 and the person.
💬 自己的 means "one's own" and changes who it refers to from context: 我有自己的想法 = my own ideas, 他有自己的想法 = his own ideas. It often comes before a noun to stress personal independence or personal perspective.
💬 表達 is commonly followed by what is being expressed: 表達想法, 表達意見, 表達感謝. 自己的 sits before the noun it describes, so 自己的想法 is literally "one's own ideas."
💬 每個人 means "each person," but in English it often comes out as "everyone." You can reuse the pattern with other nouns too: 每個員工 "each employee," 每個部門 "each department."
💬 都 often pairs with a word like 每個人 or 大家 to mean "all" or "everyone," and 能 adds the idea of being able to. A useful pattern is 每個人都能 + verb, like 每個人都能發言.
💬 Chinese often puts a feeling word before the action to show the state in which you do it: 安心說話, 開心聊天, 放心使用. This is a very reusable pattern in everyday speech.
💬 讓人 means "make people feel..." or "make people want to...," and what follows shows the result: 讓人安心, 讓人感動, 讓人很想加入. This pattern is very common when describing impressions.
💬 Here 很 really does mean "quite/really," because it goes before 想 rather than just completing an adjective sentence. Compare 很想加入 "really want to join" with 很舒服, where 很 is often just part of the normal sentence shape.
💬 讓人很想 + verb is a useful pattern for saying something creates a strong desire to do something: 讓人很想加入, 讓人很想合作, 讓人很想再來. It is a natural way to praise a company or event atmosphere.
🇹🇼 In Taiwan, 謝謝 is used very freely in professional conversation, even for small things like answering a question or ending a short exchange. It sounds warm and normal, not overly formal.
💬 In 有機會, 有 means "there is" or "to have," not possession only. This pattern is common in Chinese: 有時間 "if there's time," 有問題 "if there's a problem / have a question."
💬 有機會 often works like "if there's a chance" or "when there's an opportunity," not just the literal "have opportunity." You can reuse it in invitations and follow-ups: 有機會再聊, 有機會想拜訪貴公司.
🇹🇼 This is a very common softener in Taiwan business talk. It keeps you from sounding pushy, so invitations or future plans feel polite and low-pressure.
🇹🇼 In company introductions, 歡迎你 often does not mean a literal welcome at the door; it means "we'd be glad for you to..." or "you're very welcome to...." It sounds inviting and positive, especially when talking to candidates or visitors.
💬 歡迎 + person + verb phrase is a useful invitation pattern: 歡迎你來看看, 歡迎大家提問. Here 多 before 認識 means "more," making the invitation feel open-ended and friendly.
🇹🇼 This kind of line is common in recruiting or networking because it sounds warm without pressuring the other person. It invites further contact while leaving the next step up to them.
