Lesson Roleplay

Imagine you're calling a restaurant in Germany. You want to book a table for four people on Saturday evening, ideally with a view of the river.

Restaurant Lindenhof, Sie sprechen mit Frau Berger. Was kann ich für Sie tun?

Restaurant Lindenhof, this is Ms. Berger speaking. How can I help you?

Guten Tag, ich würde gern für Samstagabend einen Tisch für vier Personen reservieren, so gegen 19 Uhr.

Hello, I'd like to reserve a table for four on Saturday evening, around 7 pm

Samstag um 19 Uhr, das geht. Möchten Sie lieber drinnen sitzen oder draußen auf der Terrasse?

Saturday at 7, that works. Would you prefer to sit inside or outside on the terrace?

Am liebsten auf der Terrasse, wenn möglich mit Blick auf den Fluss.

Ideally on the terrace, with a view of the river if possible.

Die Tische direkt am Wasser sind leider schon weg. Weiter hinten hätte ich noch etwas, allerdings mit eingeschränkter Sicht.

Unfortunately, the tables right by the water are already taken. I'd still have something further back, but the view is limited.

Einen Tisch für vier Personen

EYE-nen tish fyr per-ZOH-nen

A table for four people

💬 ein Tisch becomes einen Tisch here because it's the thing being asked for. Only masculine words do this: eine Bestellung "an order" stays the same.

Einen Tisch für vier Personen reservieren

EYE-nen tish fyr per-ZOH-nen reh-zer-VEE-ren

To reserve a table for four people

💬 In this kind of phrase the verb waits at the very end, after all the details. Swap in your own: einen Tisch für zwei Personen reservieren "to reserve a table for two".

So gegen 19 Uhr

zoh GAY-gen NOYN-tsayn

Around 7 pm

💬 gegen before a time means "around", not "against", and so softens it further. So gegen acht means roughly eight-ish.

🇩🇪 Restaurants use the 24-hour clock on the phone, so expect 19 Uhr rather than "seven". A loose time is fine when booking, but Germans will expect you to arrive close to it.

📅🕖

Samstag um 19 Uhr

ZAMS-tahk oom NOYN-tsayn oor

Saturday at 7 pm

💬 Clock times always take um: um 19 Uhr, um halb acht "at half past seven". Days need no word in front: just Samstag.

👍

Das geht.

dahs gayt

That works.

💬 gehen literally means "to go", but das geht means "that works" or "that's possible". The question form Geht das? "Is that OK?" is just as handy.
