Imagine you're calling a restaurant in Germany. You want to book a table for four people this weekend.

Restaurant Lindenhof, Berger am Apparat. Was kann ich für Sie tun?

Restaurant Lindenhof, Berger speaking. What can I do for you?

Guten Tag, Smith hier. Hätten Sie am Samstag, dem 14., noch einen Tisch für vier Personen frei?

Hello, this is Smith. Would you still have a table for four free on Saturday the 14th?

Moment, ich schaue mal nach. An welche Uhrzeit hatten Sie denn gedacht?

One moment, let me check. What time did you have in mind?

Am liebsten so gegen halb acht, wenn das möglich wäre.

Ideally around half past seven, if that would be possible.

Da sind wir leider schon komplett ausgebucht. Um 18 Uhr oder ab 21 Uhr könnte ich Ihnen noch etwas anbieten.

Unfortunately we're already fully booked then. I could still offer you something at 6 pm or from 9 pm

Lesson Vocabulary & Phrases

📞🗣️

Am Apparat

ahm ah-pah-RAHT

Speaking (on the phone)

💬 Apparat means the phone itself, so this is literally "at the device". It only works for phone calls, never face to face.

🗣️🙋

Berger am Apparat.

BEHR-ger ahm ah-pah-RAHT

Berger speaking.

🇩🇪 Germans often answer the phone with just their surname, sometimes with nothing else. Hearing a bare Berger is normal, not rude.
