Lesson Roleplay
Imagine you've just arrived by taxi in Lisbon. You want to check the fare, pay by card, and get a receipt.
Pronto, chegámos à Rua da Prata. São trinta euros e quinze, se faz favor.
Right, here we are at Rua da Prata. That's thirty euros fifteen, please.
Desculpe, mas o taxímetro marcava vinte e seis e quarenta. Importa-se de me explicar a diferença?
Sorry, but the meter showed twenty-six forty. Would you mind explaining the difference?
Com certeza. É a portagem da ponte, dois euros e quinze, mais o suplemento da bagagem.
Of course. It's the bridge toll, two euros fifteen, plus the luggage supplement.
A portagem percebo, mas só trouxe esta mala de cabine. Também se paga suplemento por ela?
I understand the toll, but I only brought this carry-on bag. Is there a supplement for that too?
Ah, tem razão, a de cabine não conta. Peço desculpa, fica então em vinte e oito e cinquenta e cinco.
Ah, you're right, a carry-on doesn't count. Sorry about that, so it comes to twenty-eight fifty-five.
Lesson Vocabulary & Phrases
Pronto
PROHN-too
Right then
💬 Pronto looks like "ready", and it can mean that, but in speech it's mostly a filler like "right then" or "okay, so". It marks the end of one thing and the start of the next.
See breakdown →Chegámos à Rua da Prata.
sheh-GAH-moosh ah HROO-ah dah PRAH-tah
We've arrived at Rua da Prata.
💬 In Portugal, chegámos with an accent means "we arrived" (past), while chegamos without it means "we arrive". The accent opens the vowel and tells you which one is meant.
See breakdown →Pronto, chegámos à Rua da Prata.
PROHN-too sheh-GAH-moosh ah HROO-ah dah PRAH-tah
Right, here we are at Rua da Prata.
São trinta euros e quinze
sowng TREEN-tuh EH-oo-roosh ee KEEN-zeh
It's thirty euros fifteen
💬 Prices use São "they are", not É, because the amount is more than one euro. The cents follow the euros with e "and": cinco euros e vinte "five euros twenty".
See breakdown →Se faz favor
suh fahz fah-VOR
Please
🇵🇹 Se faz favor is the everyday polite "please" in Portugal. It is also how you get a waiter's attention. Por favor works too, but se faz favor sounds more natural and local.
See breakdown →São trinta euros e quinze, se faz favor.
sowng TREEN-tuh EH-oo-roosh ee KEEN-zeh suh fahz fah-VOR
That's thirty euros fifteen, please.
O taxímetro
oo tak-SEE-meh-troo
The meter
🇵🇹 Portuguese taxis must run the meter on city trips, and it shows which tariff is active. If it's off or on the night rate in daytime, pointing at o taxímetro is a fair, calm way to raise it.
See breakdown →Importa-se de me explicar
eem-POR-tah-seh deh mee esh-plee-KAR
Would you mind explaining to me
💬 Importa-se de "do you mind" is followed by the plain verb form, so you can swap in any action: Importa-se de repetir? "Would you mind repeating?"
See breakdown →A diferença
ah dee-feh-ren-sah
The difference
