Ordering a coffee (Advanced): The style of coffee, such as espresso, latte, cappuccino, Americano, mocha, etc.

💬 ão is a nasal sound, said through the nose with no clear n at the end: (gah-LOWNG, with the ng barely there).

🇵🇹 The galão is Portugal's closest match to a latte and a classic breakfast drink. It is mostly milk with a shot of espresso.

💬 num is em "in" plus um "a" merged into one word. Likewise numa is used before feminine words: numa chávena "in a cup".

💬 With coffee, claro means weaker and milkier. In everyday talk it also means "of course".

💬 The -o attached to prefere means "it", which in Portugal goes after the verb with a hyphen. Same pattern: Quer-o? "Do you want it?"

🇵🇹 For a strong galão you can also ask for a galão escuro "dark galão". Staff will know exactly what you mean.

💬 Dropping por acaso into a question softens it into "do you happen to". It works anywhere: Por acaso tem troco? "Do you happen to have change?"

💬 The accent on têm marks "they have" or "you all have". Without it, tem is "he/she/you has". When speaking to staff, têm asks about the café as a whole.

💬 Literally "I ask forgiveness". It is the standard polite apology in Portugal, slightly more formal than desculpe.

💬 o de aveia avoids repeating the noun, so it means "the oat one", with leite understood. Same trick: o de soja "the soy one".

💬 lhe is the polite "you" here, literally "if it serves you". The verb servir "to serve" is used for "to suit, to work for".

💬 This echoes the servir from se lhe servir: "it serves perfectly". You can also use it for clothes or plans: Serve! "That works!"

💬 Já agora is literally "already now", but it means "while I'm at it". It's perfect for tacking on an extra request.

🇵🇹 An abatanado is an espresso topped up with hot water and served in a bigger cup. It's the closest thing to an Americano on most Portuguese menus.

💬 "Similar to" is parecido com, so use "with" rather than "to". Same pattern: é parecida com a mãe "she looks like her mother".

💬 já agora means "by the way" or "while I'm at it", not "already now". It's a handy way to tack on an extra question.

🇵🇹 cheio "full" is an espresso filled to the top of the small cup. Plain um café is a short espresso, the default everywhere.

💬 Putting não after the word makes it a short "not X". Same pattern: Agora não "Not now".

💬 ficar por means "to stick with" or "settle for", and pelo is por plus o merged. Same pattern: Fico pela água "I'll just have water".

🇵🇹 In most Portuguese cafés you pay at the counter after you've finished. Ask this when you're ready to leave.

💬 Prices are said as euros e cents, and the word for cents is usually dropped. Same pattern: três e cinquenta "three fifty".

💬 vai with another verb makes a near future, just like English "going to". Same pattern: Vai querer açúcar? "Will you want sugar?"

💬 Use com "with" for paying by card, but cash is em dinheiro "in cash".

🇵🇹 Small cafés sometimes prefer cash for tiny amounts like a single coffee. Having coins on hand is appreciated.

💬 Obrigado changes with the speaker, not the listener: a man says obrigado, a woman says obrigada. So a woman replies Obrigada eu.

🇵🇹 A warm way to return thanks, like 'no, thank you'. You'll hear it when a waiter thanks you as you pay, and you can say it back the same way.

💬 lho is lhe "to you" and o "it" squeezed into one word. With something feminine like a bica "the espresso", it becomes lha: Já lha levo.

💬 À is a "to" plus a "the" merged into one word, and the accent marks the merger. With a masculine word, a + o becomes ao, as in ao balcão "to the counter".

🇵🇹 Many locals order and drink their coffee standing ao balcão "at the counter". Sitting down for table service is normal too, but in some cafés it costs slightly more.
