💬 paga-se means "one pays", a way of talking about a general rule without saying who. The same shape works for other verbs: fuma-se aqui? "can one smoke here?"

🇵🇹 Portugal charges for single-use takeaway cups by law, so a small extra on takeaway coffee is normal and not a tourist charge.

💬 Portuguese usually answers yes by repeating the verb from the question: paga-se? gets paga, sim. Bare sim alone can sound curt.

💬 por + o merges into pelo. In the same way, por + a becomes pela: pela água "for the water".

💬 trouxer is the form of trazer "to bring" used after se "if" when talking about something that might happen. It looks nothing like the base verb, so learn it as a set phrase.

🇵🇹 This is the everyday Portuguese way to say "maybe". You'll hear it far more than talvez, and it softens a suggestion so it doesn't sound like a correction.

💬 Portuguese says you are "with hurry": estar com pressa. The same shape covers other states, like estar com fome "to be hungry" and estar com frio "to be cold".

💬 a + o merges into ao: ao balcão "at the counter". ão at the end is nasal, roughly (bal-KOWNG) said through the nose.

🇵🇹 A galão is served in a tall glass with lots of milk, a typical breakfast or mid-morning drink. It's lighter than a bica "espresso".

💬 sair normally means "to leave" or "to go out", but in cafés and restaurants it means an order is coming out of the kitchen or machine. já here means "right away", not "already".

💬 The ending follows the speaker, not the listener. Men say obrigado and women say obrigada.

💬 simpático means "kind" or "nice", not "sympathetic". You'd use simpática when speaking to a woman.
