哥哥

gē gē

Older brother

💬 Chinese has no general word for 'brother' or 'sister' in daily use; you always pick older or younger: 哥哥 (gē ge) older brother, 弟弟 (dì di) younger brother, 姐姐 (jiě jie) "older sister", 妹妹 (mèi mei) younger sister.

🇨🇳 Being older carries weight, so people care which one you mean. 哥 on its own is also a friendly way to address a slightly older man, like a waiter or taxi driver.

姐姐

jiě jiě

Older sister

💬 Chinese has no general word for "sister". You choose by age: 姐姐 (jiě jie) is older, and 妹妹 (mèi mei) is younger. The second syllable is said lightly, with no tone.

妹妹

mèi mèi

Younger sister

🇨🇳 Younger women such as shop assistants or waitresses are often called 美女 "pretty girl" or, more casually, 妹妹 — it sounds friendly, not odd.

👴👨

爷爷

yé yé

Grandpa (father's side)

🇨🇳 Chinese splits grandparents by side of the family: 爷爷 and 奶奶 are your father's parents, 外公 and 外婆 your mother's. 外 means "outside", reflecting the old idea that a married daughter's family was 'outside' the main line.

👵👨

奶奶

nǎi nǎi

Grandma (father's side)

🇨🇳 Grandparents, especially 奶奶, very often help raise grandchildren while parents work, so you'll hear about them a lot when people talk about family.
