Lesson Roleplay
Imagine you've just arrived home in a taxi from the airport. You want to pay, question the high fare, and ask for a receipt.
师傅,到了是吧?请问多少钱?
shī fù dào le shì ba qǐng wèn duō shǎo qián
We're here, right, driver? How much is it, please?
嗯,到了。打表一共八十六块。
ń dào le dǎ biǎo yī gòng bā shí liù kuài
Yep, we're here. The meter says eighty-six yuan in total.
八十六?我平时从机场过来也就六十左右,是不是绕路了?
bā shí liù wǒ píng shí cóng jī chǎng guò lái yě jiù liù shí zuǒ yòu shì bù shì rào lù le
Eighty-six? I usually pay around sixty from the airport. Did we take a detour?
高架上堵得厉害,我就走了辅路,是多绕了一点儿。
gāo jià shàng dǔ dé lì hài wǒ jiù zǒu le fǔ lù shì duō rào le yì diǎn ér
The elevated highway was badly jammed, so I took the side road. It was a bit longer.
那您换路之前,能不能先跟我说一声呢?
nà nín huàn lù zhī qián néng bù néng xiān gēn wǒ shuō yī shēng ne
Couldn't you have let me know before changing the route?
Lesson Vocabulary & Phrases
师傅
shī fù
Driver
🇨🇳 师傅 (shī fu) is the standard polite way to address a taxi driver, and also mechanics, cooks and other skilled workers. Using it sets a friendly, respectful tone, which helps when you have to argue about the fare later.
See breakdown →到了
dào le
We're here
💬 了 here signals that a new situation has arrived: 到了 means "we've arrived", not just "arrive". It works the same way in 下雨了 "it's started raining".
See breakdown →师傅,到了是吧?
shī fù dào le shì ba
We're here, right, driver?
💬 Add 是吧 to the end of any statement to turn it into a check like "right?": 八十块是吧? "eighty yuan, right?"
See breakdown →打表
dǎ biǎo
To go by the meter
🇨🇳 Asking 打表吗? before you set off makes sure the driver uses the meter instead of quoting a flat price, which is a common trick at airports and tourist spots. Licensed city taxis are supposed to run the meter.
See breakdown →一共八十六块
yī gòng bā shí liù kuài
It's eighty-six yuan in total
💬 In speech, prices use 块 (kuài) rather than the written 元 (yuán). 一共 (yí gòng) "in total" is said with (yí), because 一 changes to a rising tone before a falling tone.
See breakdown →打表一共八十六块。
dǎ biǎo yī gòng bā shí liù kuài
The meter says eighty-six yuan in total.
绕路
rào lù
To take a detour
是不是绕路了?
shì bù shì rào lù le
Did we take a detour?
💬 Putting 是不是 in front of a statement turns it into a soft question like "isn't it the case that...?": 是不是走错了? "did we go the wrong way?"
🇨🇳 Framing the complaint as a question is gentler than saying outright "you took a detour". It lets the driver explain without losing face, which usually gets you a better outcome.
See breakdown →高架
gāo jià
Elevated highway
🇨🇳 Big cities such as Shanghai rely heavily on 高架 (gāo jià). Drivers often switch between these and the side roads underneath depending on traffic, and that is a frequent reason for a higher fare.
