Lesson Roleplay

Imagine you're getting into a taxi in Beijing. You want to go to the Guomao business district and ask the driver to take a shorter route.

师傅,您好,去国贸。麻烦您走长安街,那边近一点。

shī fù nín hǎo qù guó mào má fán nín zǒu cháng ān jiē nà biān jìn yì diǎn

Hello, driver. To Guomao, please. Could you take Chang'an Avenue? It's a bit shorter that way.

好嘞。不过这会儿长安街挺堵的,我绕二环走反而快。

hǎo lei bù guò zhè huì er cháng ān jiē tǐng dǔ de wǒ rào èr huán zǒu fǎn ér kuài

Sure thing. But Chang'an Avenue is pretty jammed right now. Going around the Second Ring Road would actually be faster.

绕二环会不会远不少啊?我平时打车也就三十来块。

rào èr huán huì bú huì yuǎn bù shǎo a wǒ píng shí dǎ chē yě jiù sān shí lái kuài

Wouldn't the Second Ring Road be quite a bit longer? Normally a taxi there only costs me about thirty yuan.

那就听您的,走长安街。真堵上了可别怨我啊。

nà jiù tīng nín de zǒu cháng ān jiē zhēn dǔ shàng le kě bié yuàn wǒ a

Alright, we'll do it your way and take Chang'an Avenue. Just don't blame me if we get stuck in traffic.

师傅,刚才那个路口怎么没左转?导航是让左转的。

shī fù gāng cái nà gè lù kǒu zěn me méi zuǒ zhuǎn dǎo háng shì ràng zuǒ zhuǎn de

Excuse me, why didn't we turn left at that last intersection? The navigation said to turn left.

má fán nín

🛣️🏙️

走长安街

zǒu cháng ān jiē

Take Chang'an Avenue

💬 走 (zǒu) usually means "walk," but with a road after it, it means "go by way of." Swap in any route: 走三环 "take the Third Ring Road", 走高速 "take the expressway".

🛣️🏙️❓

麻烦您走长安街

má fán nín zǒu cháng ān jiē

Could you take Chang'an Avenue?

💬 麻烦您 (má fan nín) means "may I trouble you to." Put any request after it: 麻烦您开空调 "could you turn on the AC".

🇨🇳 This is a polite but firm way to name your route at the start of a ride. Beijing drivers are used to passengers asking for a specific road and won't take offense.

↘️📏

那边近一点。

nà biān jìn yì diǎn

It's a bit shorter that way.

💬 近 "close" works on its own as the whole comment, with no 是. Adding 一点 after it makes it "a bit closer". Swap it for 快一点 "a bit faster".

👍✅

好嘞。

hǎo lei

Sure thing.

🇨🇳 好嘞 (hǎo lei) is a cheerful, very colloquial "you got it", typical of drivers, waiters and northern speech. It sounds warm but is too casual for formal settings.

⏰👉

这会儿

zhè huì er

Right now

💬 In Beijing speech this often comes out as (zhèi huìr), with the 儿 blending into the word.

绕二环

rào èr huán

To go around the Second Ring Road

💬 绕 (rào) means "go around" or "detour." The same word gives 绕路 "take a roundabout way", which passengers use to accuse a driver of padding the fare.

🙂‍↔️⚡

反而快

fǎn ér kuài

Actually faster

💬 反而 (fǎn ér) signals that the result is the opposite of what you'd expect. The longer road turns out faster. It goes right before the description: 反而贵 "actually more expensive".

📏➕↔️

远不少

yuǎn bù shǎo

Quite a bit farther

💬 不少 literally means "not few." After an adjective it means "by quite a lot": 贵不少 "quite a bit pricier".
