Giving compliments (Advanced): Complimenting strangers

💬 The second syllable is toneless: 衣服 is said (yī fu), with a light, quick (fu).

💬 子 here is a toneless ending that just makes the word sound complete, as in 裙子 (qún zi). The same ending appears in 孩子 and 杯子 "cup".

💬 真 "really" goes right before the adjective to make a heartfelt exclamation. Swap in others: 真可爱 "so cute", 真帅 "so handsome".

💬 Here 好 doesn't mean "good". Before an adjective it means "so", and 啊 at the end adds excitement: 好漂亮啊 "so pretty!"

💬 Wrap an adjective in 太…了 to gush "so ...!": 太漂亮了, 太好看了. Without 了 it usually means "too much", as in 太贵 "too expensive".

💬 Put 的 after a person to show ownership. The same pattern gives 你的发型 and 你的孩子.

🇨🇳 Praising what someone wears is easier for strangers to accept than praising their body or face. It's a common, low-pressure compliment.

💬 很 here doesn't really mean "very"; it just completes the sentence before an adjective. For real emphasis, use 非常好看 "extremely good-looking".

💬 好看 is literally "good to look at". The same pattern gives 好吃 "tasty" and 好听 "nice to hear".

💬 The adjective works on its own as the verb, so there's no 是 "is". It's simply "thing + 很 + adjective": 你的衣服很时髦.

💬 Put a quality after 很有 to say someone has a lot of it: 很有气质, 很有意思 "very interesting".

🇨🇳 This is a high compliment, often given to women who don't fit the usual "pretty" mold. People hear it as sincere because it praises character and bearing.

💬 Putting 的 at the end makes it about a purchase that already happened. Asking about the past this way, with no word for "did", is very common: 你什么时候来的？ "When did you come?"

🇨🇳 Asking where something was bought is a natural follow-up to a compliment in China. It shows you mean it, and strangers happily answer.

💬 The second 谢 is light and toneless: (xiè xie).

🇨🇳 A modest way to receive praise, and a bit more formal. Brushing off a compliment like this is the polite norm, though a simple 谢谢 is now perfectly fine too.
