Lesson Vocabulary & Phrases
Pasa, pasa
PAH-sah PAH-sah
Come in, come in
🇪🇸 Saying it twice is warm hospitality, not impatience. Hosts in Spain often hurry guests in like this, especially out of the cold.
See breakdown →Hace un frío que pela
AH-seh oon FREE-oh keh PEH-lah
It's freezing cold
💬 Weather in Spanish uses hace "it makes": hace calor "it's hot", hace viento "it's windy". The que pela "that peels" ending is a colourful add-on meaning "seriously" cold.
See breakdown →Pasa, pasa, que hace un frío que pela.
PAH-sah PAH-sah keh AH-seh oon FREE-oh keh PEH-lah
Come in, come in, it's freezing out there.
💬 Here que works like a casual "because" linking two thoughts. You'll hear it constantly in speech: date prisa, que llegamos tarde "hurry up, we're late".
See breakdown →¡Qué alegría!
keh ah-leh-GREE-ah
How wonderful!
💬 qué plus a noun makes a "what a…!" exclamation. Swap the noun: ¡qué pena! "what a shame!", ¡qué sorpresa! "what a surprise!".
See breakdown →Verte otra vez
BEHR-teh OH-trah bays
To see you again
💬 The "you" sticks onto the end of the verb: ver + te = verte. For several people in Spain it's veros "to see you all".
See breakdown →¡Qué alegría verte otra vez!
keh ah-leh-GREE-ah BEHR-teh OH-trah bays
So lovely to see you again!
🇪🇸 This usually comes with two kisses on the cheeks, starting with your right cheek. With in-laws you've met before, a handshake would feel cold.
See breakdown →Os he traído
ohs eh TRAH-ee-doh
I've brought you
💬 os is "you" for several people you're on familiar terms with, used only in Spain. In Latin America you'd hear les he traído instead.
See breakdown →Una cosilla
OO-nah koh-SEE-yah
A little something
💬 The -illa ending shrinks cosa "thing" and makes it sound modest and friendly. Same trick: un momentito "just a sec", un regalillo "a little gift".
See breakdown →Os he traído una cosilla.
ohs eh TRAH-ee-doh OO-nah koh-SEE-yah
I've brought you both a little something.
🇪🇸 Playing down your gift is the expected move in Spain, even if it cost a fair bit. Announcing it proudly would sound a bit odd.
