Lesson Roleplay
Imagine you're calling a restaurant in Spain about your Saturday group booking. You want to ask how to cancel without losing your deposit.
Restaurante La Barraca, buenas tardes, ¿dígame?
La Barraca Restaurant, good afternoon, how can I help you?
Buenas tardes. Tengo una reserva para el sábado a nombre de Smith y quería consultarle algo sobre la cancelación.
Good afternoon. I have a reservation for Saturday under the name Smith, and I wanted to ask you something about cancelling.
Sí, claro, un momentito... Aquí la tengo: ocho personas a las nueve y media. ¿Qué quería saber?
Yes, of course, just a moment... Here it is: eight people at nine thirty. What did you want to know?
Es que no sé si al final vendremos todos. ¿Hasta cuándo podría cancelar sin que me cobren la señal?
The thing is, I'm not sure we'll all end up coming. Until when could I cancel without being charged the deposit?
Para grupos pedimos cuarenta y ocho horas de antelación, o sea, hasta el jueves a las nueve y media de la noche.
For groups we ask for forty-eight hours' notice, so that's until Thursday at nine thirty in the evening.
Lesson Vocabulary & Phrases
¿Dígame?
DEE-gah-meh
How can I help you?
🇪🇸 This is how many people in Spain answer the phone, businesses included. It literally means "tell me", and it isn't rude, just brisk and normal.
See breakdown →Tengo una reserva
TEN-goh OO-nah reh-SEHR-bah
I have a reservation
Para el sábado
pah-rah ehl SAH-bah-doh
For Saturday
💬 Days of the week take el where English uses "on" or nothing: el sábado is "on Saturday". Make it plural for a habit: los sábados "on Saturdays".
See breakdown →Tengo una reserva para el sábado
TEN-goh OO-nah reh-SEHR-bah pah-rah ehl SAH-bah-doh
I have a reservation for Saturday
A nombre de Smith
ah NOHM-breh deh
Under the name Smith
🇪🇸 Staff in Spain usually ask ¿a nombre de quién? "under whose name?". Give your surname only, and be ready to spell it out if it's foreign.
See breakdown →La cancelación
lah kahn-theh-lah-THYOHN
The cancellation
💬 Words ending in -ción are almost always feminine and usually match an English "-tion" word: la reserva aside, think la confirmación "the confirmation". In Spain the c is said (th): (kan-theh-la-THYON).
See breakdown →Un momentito...
oon moh-men-TEE-toh
Just a moment...
💬 Adding -ito makes a word smaller and friendlier, so momentito feels softer than plain momento. You'll hear the same with un segundito "just a sec".
See breakdown →Aquí la tengo
ah-KEE lah TEN-goh
Here it is
💬 la stands in for something feminine already mentioned, here the booking, and goes before the verb. For something masculine it becomes lo: aquí lo tengo.
See breakdown →¿Qué quería saber?
keh keh-REE-ah sah-BEHR
What did you want to know?
🇪🇸 The past form quería is a polite habit, not really about the past. Staff use it to sound gentle, and you can too: quería cancelar "I wanted to cancel" softens a request.
