Lesson Roleplay
Imagine you're getting into a taxi in Mexico City. You want to ride to a street in a nearby neighborhood without paying too much.
Buenas tardes. ¿Me lleva a la colonia Roma, por favor? A la calle Orizaba.
Good afternoon. Could you take me to Colonia Roma, please? To Orizaba Street.
Buenas tardes, joven. Claro, súbase. ¿Cómo quiere que nos vayamos, por Viaducto o por Periférico?
Good afternoon, young man. Sure, get in. Which way do you want to go, Viaducto or Periférico?
Por Viaducto, si no le molesta. En la aplicación me sale que es más corto.
Viaducto, if you don't mind. The app says it's shorter.
Uy, a esta hora Viaducto está parado. Por Periférico damos más vuelta, pero avanzamos.
Oh, at this hour Viaducto is at a standstill. Periférico is more roundabout, but at least we'll keep moving.
Bueno, usted conoce mejor. Nada más que no se nos suba mucho el taxímetro, ¿eh?
Okay, you know better. Just don't let the meter run up too much, okay?
Lesson Vocabulary & Phrases
La colonia Roma
lah koh-LOH-nyah ROH-mah
The Roma neighborhood
🇲🇽 In Mexico City, neighbourhoods are called colonias, and drivers navigate by them. Giving the colonia plus a nearby street or landmark gets you there faster than a full address.
See breakdown →¿Me lleva a la colonia Roma, por favor?
meh YEH-vah ah lah koh-LOH-nyah ROH-mah pohr fah-VOHR
Could you take me to Colonia Roma, please?
💬 lleva here is the polite usted form, so ¿Me lleva a...? works for any destination: ¿Me lleva al aeropuerto? "Could you take me to the airport?"
See breakdown →Súbase.
SOO-bah-seh
Get in.
💬 In Mexico, getting into a car is subirse "to go up", and getting out is bajarse "to go down". You'll hear aquí me bajo "I'll get out here".
See breakdown →¿Cómo quiere que nos vayamos?
KOH-moh KYER-eh keh nohs vah-YAH-mohs
Which way do you want us to go?
🇲🇽 Drivers often ask which way you want to go, partly out of courtesy. It also means the choice of route becomes yours if traffic turns bad, so naming a route or showing your map app protects you.
See breakdown →Si no le molesta
see noh leh moh-LEHS-tah
If you don't mind
🇲🇽 Polite openers like this matter in Mexico. Use one before asking for a different route, so the request doesn't sound like you're accusing the driver of cheating you.
See breakdown →En la aplicación
en lah ah-plee-kah-SYOHN
In the app
Es más corto
ess mahs KOR-toh
It's shorter
💬 más plus a describing word makes a comparison: más rápido "faster", más barato "cheaper".
See breakdown →En la aplicación me sale que es más corto.
en lah ah-plee-kah-SYOHN meh SAH-leh keh ess mahs KOR-toh
The app says it's shorter.
💬 me sale literally means "comes out to me". It's the everyday way to say what a screen or result shows you: me sale un error "I'm getting an error".
See breakdown →A esta hora
ah EHS-tah OR-ah
At this time of day
