Lesson Roleplay
Imagine you're in a taxi from the airport arriving at your hotel in Mexico City. You want the driver to drop you off nearby for the agreed price.
Hasta aquí llegamos, joven. Colima está cerrada por obras y no me puedo meter.
This is as far as we go, young man. Colima Street is closed for construction and I can't turn in.
Ah, caray. Pero quedamos en que me dejaba en la puerta del hotel, ¿no?
Oh, shoot. But we agreed you'd drop me off at the hotel door, didn't we?
Sí, pero tendría que dar toda la vuelta por Orizaba, y eso ya son cincuenta pesos más.
Yes, but I'd have to go all the way around through Orizaba, and that's fifty pesos more.
Fíjese que el precio lo acordamos desde el aeropuerto. ¿No me podría dejar aunque sea en la esquina de Orizaba?
Well, we agreed on the price back at the airport. Couldn't you at least drop me off at the corner of Orizaba?
Ándele, pues. Le doy la vuelta y lo dejo ahí sin cobrarle de más.
Alright, then. I'll go around and drop you there without charging you extra.
Lesson Vocabulary & Phrases
Hasta aquí llegamos
AS-tah ah-KEE yeh-GAH-mohs
This is as far as we go
💬 llegamos can mean "we arrive" or "we arrived". Here it's the past, so the phrase literally means "we got as far as here".
See breakdown →Joven
HOH-ven
Young man
🇲🇽 Drivers and vendors say joven to any man who isn't elderly, even a fifty-year-old. It's polite and friendly, not a comment on your age.
See breakdown →Hasta aquí llegamos, joven.
AS-tah ah-KEE yeh-GAH-mohs HOH-ben
This is as far as we go, young man.
🇲🇽 Mexican taxi drivers and vendors often call any younger man joven and any younger woman señorita. It's polite, not condescending.
See breakdown →Cerrada por obras
seh-RRAH-dah pohr OH-brahs
Closed for construction
💬 cerrada ends in -a because it describes a feminine noun like la calle "the street". For a closed road you'd say cerrado por obras about el camino.
See breakdown →No me puedo meter.
noh meh pweh-doh meh-TEHR
I can't turn in.
💬 meterse literally means "to put oneself in". With cars it means turning into a street or pulling in somewhere: no se puede meter aquí "you can't pull in here".
See breakdown →Ah, caray.
ah kah-RAI
Oh, shoot.
🇲🇽 caray is a mild, family-friendly way to show annoyance or surprise. It's safe to say to a stranger, unlike stronger Mexican swear words.
See breakdown →Quedamos en que
keh-DAH-mohs ehn keh
We agreed that
💬 quedar en means "to agree on", not "to stay". Swap in what you agreed: quedamos en trescientos "we agreed on three hundred".
See breakdown →Dar toda la vuelta
dahr TOH-dah lah BWEHL-tah
To go all the way around
🇲🇽 With one-way streets everywhere, a driver who says he'd have to dar toda la vuelta is often hinting that the detour will cost more.
See breakdown →Eso ya son
EH-soh yah sohn
That's already
💬 son is "they are", not es "it is", because the amount that follows is plural. Spanish says "that are fifty pesos": eso son cien pesos "that's a hundred pesos".
