Foul language (Advanced): Common swear words and phrases

🇲🇽 This is the polite version of no mames. It's mild enough that many people say it in front of parents.

🇲🇽 Anything involving madre is heavy in Mexico, and this is one of the strongest exclamations. Expect people to react if you say it in public.

💬 cagar "to shit" is used here with la to mean "to mess up". ya adds "now it's done", the same way it does in ya llegué "I'm here now".

💬 de la chingada works like a describing word meaning "terrible": el tráfico está de la chingada "traffic is awful".

🇲🇽 Used as praise among friends. It's vulgar but positive, so the tone is warm rather than offensive.

🇲🇽 In Mexico, pendejo mainly means "idiot" and gets tossed around constantly among friends. From a stranger, though, it's a real insult.

💬 Change the ending to match who you're talking to: say no seas pendeja to a woman. The same goes for menso/mensa and estúpido/estúpida.

🇲🇽 Among friends it's a filler as constant as "dude". Aimed at a stranger in a sharp tone, it means "idiot".

🇲🇽 This one is actually mild, closer to "dummy". Parents say it to kids, so it's safe for playful teasing.

💬 cabrón literally means "male goat". Its sense swings with tone: ¡qué cabrón! can even mean "how impressive!"

🇲🇽 Between close male friends, this can be a grinning compliment. In anger, it's a serious insult, so tone decides everything.

🇲🇽 Mexicans more often say hijo de la chingada or the softened hijo de su madre. Both are still strong.

💬 perra literally means "female dog", but the male perro isn't an insult. For an actual dog, use perrita or la perra carefully, depending on context.

💬 te "yourself" gets attached to the end of the command, which moves the stress mark onto cá. Same pattern: siéntate "sit down".

💬 hocico means an animal's "snout", so calling someone's mouth that is what makes the phrase rude.

🇲🇽 It's fairly mild, roughly like "get lost", and can be said half-jokingly.

💬 vete means "go away" and attaches to a destination with a: vete a la casa "go home". Here, la chingada stands for a vague, awful place.

🇲🇽 This is among the most offensive things you can say in Mexico, because insulting someone's mother hits hard. It can easily start a fight, so recognize it rather than use it.

💬 valer means "to be worth", so the phrase is literally "it's worth a mother to me". Swap the ending to change the strength: me vale alone is mild, while me vale verga is crude.

🇲🇽 Common in casual talk, but rude in front of elders or at work.

💬 verga is a vulgar word for "penis". It shows up in many Mexican expressions, like a la verga "damn" / "get lost".

💬 demonios "demons" is the plural. You can swap in diablos or the cruder chingados for the same "what the ___?" frame.
