Lesson Roleplay

Imagine you're calling a Hunan restaurant in China. You want to book a table for a group dinner with friends and family this Saturday evening.

您好,湘味轩,请问有什么可以帮您?

nín hǎo xiāng wèi xuān qǐng wèn yǒu shén me kě yǐ bāng nín

Hello, Xiangweixuan Restaurant. How can I help you?

你好,我想订个位子,这周六晚上七点,大概八个人。

nǐ hǎo wǒ xiǎng dìng gè wèi zi zhè zhōu liù wǎn shàng qī diǎn dà gài bā gè rén

Hi, I'd like to book a table for this Saturday at 7 pm, for about eight people.

好的,周六七点,八位。请问里面有小朋友吗?

hǎo de zhōu liù qī diǎn bā wèi qǐng wèn lǐ miàn yǒu xiǎo péng yǒu ma

Sure, Saturday at seven, eight people. Will there be any children in your party?

有两个小孩,一把儿童椅就够了。不过人数可能还会多一两个。

yǒu liǎng gè xiǎo hái yī bǎ ér tóng yǐ jiù gòu le bù guò rén shù kě néng hái huì duō yī liǎng gè

There are two kids, so one high chair is enough. But we might have one or two more people.

那大厅的桌子可能坐不下,我建议您订个包间,最多能坐十二位。

nà dà tīng de zhuō zi kě néng zuò bù xià wǒ jiàn yì nín dìng gè bāo jiān zuì duō néng zuò shí èr wèi

Then a table in the main dining room might not fit everyone. I'd suggest a private room, which seats up to twelve.

Lesson Vocabulary & Phrases

🙋‍♂️❓

请问

qǐng wèn

Excuse me

🇨🇳 请问 (qǐng wèn) literally means "please may I ask." Staff use it to soften almost any question to a customer, and you can use it the same way to get someone's attention politely.

🤔🙋‍♂️➡️❓

有什么可以帮您?

yǒu shén me kě yǐ bāng nín

What can I do for you?

💬 您 (nín) is the polite form of 你 "you." Staff use it with customers, and you'll hear it all through service conversations.

🙋‍♀️🤝❓

请问有什么可以帮您?

qǐng wèn yǒu shén me kě yǐ bāng nín

How can I help you?

🇨🇳 This is the standard opening when you phone a restaurant. You can answer straight away with what you want, such as 订个位子.

📖🍽️

订个位子

dìng gè wèi zi

To book a table

💬 Putting 个 after a verb, with the 一 dropped, makes the request sound light and casual, like "book a table, just a quick thing." You'll see the same pattern in 留个姓名 "leave a name" and 喝个茶 "have a cup of tea."

👶❓

有小朋友吗?

yǒu xiǎo péng yǒu ma

Are there any children?

💬 Adding 吗 (ma) to the end of a statement turns it into a yes/no question. 有小朋友 "there are kids" becomes 有小朋友吗? without any change to the word order.

👶🎉❓

请问里面有小朋友吗?

qǐng wèn lǐ miàn yǒu xiǎo péng yǒu ma
