Lesson Roleplay

Imagine you're in a taxi in Taipei late at night. The fare seems too high, and you want to ask the driver about it before you pay.

司機大哥,不好意思,跳表怎麼是四百二?我平常搭差不多三百左右耶。

sī jī dà gē bù hǎo yì sī tiào biǎo zěn me shì sì bǎi èr wǒ píng cháng dā chà bù duō sān bǎi zuǒ yòu yé

Excuse me, sir, how come the meter says 420? I usually pay around 300 for this ride.

喔,現在過十一點了,有夜間加成。而且剛剛基隆路在施工,我有繞一下。

ō xiàn zài guò shí yī diǎn le yǒu yè jiān jiā chéng ér qiě gāng gāng jī lóng lù zài shī gōng wǒ yǒu rào yī xià

Oh, it's past eleven, so there's a night surcharge. Also, Keelung Road was under construction, so I took a detour.

夜間加成我了解,可是要繞路的話,您好像沒先跟我說欸。

yè jiān jiā chéng wǒ liǎo jiě kě shì yào rào lù de huà nín hǎo xiàng méi xiān gēn wǒ shuō āi

I understand the night surcharge, but if you were taking a detour, I don't think you mentioned it to me first.

這倒是,我應該先問你一聲。不然這樣好了,算你三百五,可以嗎?

zhè dǎo shì wǒ yīng gāi xiān wèn nǐ yī shēng bù rán zhè yàng hǎo le suàn nǐ sān bǎi wǔ kě yǐ ma

That's true, I should have asked you first. How about this: I'll charge you 350. Is that okay?

好,謝謝您體諒。我給您五百,麻煩找一下。

hǎo xiè xiè nín tǐ liàng wǒ gěi nín wǔ bǎi má fán zhǎo yī xià

Okay, thanks for understanding. Here's 500. Could I have the change, please?

Lesson Vocabulary & Phrases

🚕💰

跳表

tiào biǎo

Meter fare

💬 跳表 (tiào biǎo) is literally "the meter jumps", the way the fare ticks upward. It also works as a verb: 有跳表嗎? "Is the meter running?"

See breakdown →
❓

怎麼是四百二?

zěn me shì sì bǎi èr

How is it 420?

💬 Prices drop the last unit word when it's obvious. 四百二 (sì bǎi èr) means 420, not 402, just as 三百五 is 350.

❓🚕🔢

跳表怎麼是四百二?

tiào biǎo zěn me shì sì bǎi èr

How come the meter says 420?

🇹🇼 Opening with 怎麼 "how come" sounds like a puzzled question rather than an accusation. That keeps the driver from getting defensive while you still question the fare.

🔁🚕

我平常搭

wǒ píng cháng dā

When I usually take it

💬 搭 (dā) is the everyday Taiwan verb for riding transport, as in 搭計程車 "take a taxi" or 搭捷運 "take the MRT". Mainland speech leans on 坐 or 打車 instead.

See breakdown →

差不多三百左右

chà bù duō sān bǎi zuǒ yòu

About 300 or so

💬 差不多 goes before the number and 左右 (zuǒ yòu) goes after it, and both mean "about". Stacking them is redundant but very natural in speech, for example 差不多十分鐘左右 "about ten minutes or so".

🙋💵

我平常搭差不多三百左右耶。

wǒ píng cháng dā chà bù duō sān bǎi zuǒ yòu yé

I usually pay around 300.

💬 耶 (ye) at the end is a soft Taiwanese-flavored particle that adds a note of mild surprise or emphasis. Here it sounds like "...you know?"

🇹🇼 Citing what you usually pay is the standard polite way to challenge a fare in Taiwan. You state a fact and let the driver explain instead of accusing them.

🕚➡️

現在過十一點了

xiàn zài guò shí yī diǎn le

It's past eleven now

💬 過 plus a time means "past" that time. The 了 at the end marks that this is now the new situation. Swap in any hour: 過十二點了 "it's past midnight".

🌙➕💰

夜間加成

yè jiān jiā chéng

Night surcharge

🇹🇼 Taiwan taxis legitimately add a night surcharge, typically from 11 pm to 6 am. It's often also applied over Lunar New Year, so a higher late-night fare isn't necessarily a scam.

See breakdown →
🌙💰

有夜間加成

yǒu yè jiān jiā chéng

There's a night surcharge

💬 有 works on its own to mean "there is", with no word for "there" needed. For example, 有問題 means "there's a problem".
