💬 The 耶 (ye) at the end adds a soft "you see" tone, making the refusal sound apologetic rather than blunt. It's very typical of Taiwanese speech.

🇹🇼 悠遊卡 (yōu yóu kǎ) is the EasyCard, the transit card most people in Taipei carry. Many taxis accept it even when they don't take credit cards, so it's worth keeping it topped up.

💬 Put 的 (de) between a description and a noun, and the description comes first. Swap it out: 很貴的車 (hěn guì de chē) "an expensive car".

💬 不太 (bú tài) before an adjective means "not very" — a softer no than plain 不. Note that 不 is read (bú) here because 太 has a falling tone.

💬 好像 (hǎo xiàng) "seems" and the 吧 (ba) at the end soften the complaint into a question. Together they let you push back without sounding accusatory.

🇹🇼 Raising a problem this indirectly is the normal way to object in Taiwan; a blunt "that's wrong" with a driver would sound confrontational.

💬 台 (tái) is the counting word for machines and vehicles: 一台電腦 (yì tái diàn nǎo) "a computer", 兩台車 "two cars".

💬 張 (zhāng) is the counting word for flat things like bills, tickets, and paper. 一 is read (yì) here, since it comes before a first-tone word.

🇹🇼 A NT$1000 bill is hard to break for a short ride, and drivers often lack change early in a shift. Small bills or an EasyCard make taxi payment much smoother.

💬 找 (zhǎo) means "give change", and 得開 (de kāi) adds "able to". Swapping in 找不開 (zhǎo bù kāi) gives "can't make change".

💬 剛 (gāng) before a verb means "just": 我剛到 (wǒ gāng dào) "I just arrived". 出車 (chū chē) literally "take out the car" is how drivers say they've started working.

💬 零錢 (líng qián) means small change: coins and small bills. 夠 (gòu) "enough" works on its own without 是.

💬 裡面 (lǐ miàn) "inside" goes after the noun, the reverse of English: 悠遊卡裡面 "in the EasyCard", 包包裡面 "in the bag".

💬 多 (duō) after a round number means "a bit more than". Swap the number: 五十多 (wǔ shí duō) "fifty-something".

💬 嗶 (bī) imitates the beep a card reader makes, and in Taiwan it's used as a verb meaning "to tap" a card. It's casual but completely standard.

💬 Ending with 好了 (hǎo le) signals settling on an option: "I'll just do that, then." Swap in another choice: 那我喝茶好了 "then I'll just have tea".

💬 一下 (yí xià) after a verb makes the action sound quick and easy. 就好 (jiù hǎo) adds "and that's all": 等一下就好 "just wait a moment".

🇹🇼 扣款成功 (kòu kuǎn chéng gōng) is the stiff, official wording you'll hear from card readers and see on screens, not something people normally say in conversation.

💬 Adding 掉 (diào) after a verb means getting rid of something: 丟掉 "throw away", 擦掉 "wipe off".

💬 掉 (diào) after a verb means the thing is removed or gone. You can use it with other actions too: 丟掉 (diū diào) "throw away", 吃掉 "eat up".

🇹🇼 Phrasing a criticism as "it would be better if…" with a soft 喔 (o) at the end is a polite way to point out a problem without causing anyone to lose face.

💬 In Taiwan, 等等 (děng děng) often means "in a bit" or "later", as in 我等等去 "I'll go in a bit". It can also mean "wait!", so context tells you which one you're hearing.

💬 好 after a verb means "properly" or "securely": 坐好 "sit properly", 拿好 "hold it firmly".

🇹🇼 Taiwanese taxi drivers routinely say this as you get out. It's a friendly send-off, so it signals that any earlier disagreement has been smoothed over.
