Lesson Vocabulary & Phrases

👩‍🦳

お義母さん

o kaa san

Mother-in-law

🇯🇵 When speaking to or about your spouse's mother, お義母さん is the natural family term. In real family conversation, this is more usual than a direct equivalent of "mother-in-law."

⏳😊

ご無沙汰しております。

go mu sata shi te ori masu

It's been a while.

💬 無沙汰 is read (busata), so the whole phrase is (go-busata shite orimasu). おります is a humble form of います, which makes this noticeably polite.

🇯🇵 This is the standard opener when you see in-laws or older acquaintances after months apart. It carries a slight apology for not keeping in touch, and that tone suits a returning son- or daughter-in-law.

⏳🚫🏥

なかなか伺えなくて

nakanaka ukagae naku te

I haven't been able to visit for a long time

💬 なかなか followed by a negative means "just can't manage to," not "quite": なかなか眠れない "I just can't get to sleep." 伺えなくて is the humble verb 伺う (ukagau) "to visit" in its can't-form, ending in て to give the reason.

🙏😔

すみません。

sumi mase n

I'm sorry.

🙏🚫🏥

なかなか伺えなくて、すみません。

nakanaka ukagae naku te sumi mase n

I'm sorry I haven't been able to visit.

🇯🇵 Apologizing for not visiting often is a standard greeting when you arrive at your in-laws' home, even if nobody expected more visits. It's a polite gesture rather than an admission of fault, and they'll usually wave it away.

🚶‍♂️➡️🌍

遠いところ

tooi tokoro

From so far away

💬 ところ literally means "place", but after a describing word it means "in this situation": お忙しいところ "while you're busy" works the same way.

😩💤

疲れたでしょう。

tsukare ta deshou

You must be tired.

💬 Adding でしょう to a past-tense verb turns it into a warm guess about how someone feels. Another example: お腹すいたでしょう "You must be hungry."

🚶‍♂️📍😩

遠いところ、疲れたでしょう。

tooi tokoro tsukare ta deshou

You must be tired after coming all this way.

🇯🇵 This is the classic welcome a host gives a guest who has travelled. A simple ありがとうございます "thank you" or いえいえ "oh, not at all" is the natural reply.

👨‍🦳

お義父さん

o tou san

Father-in-law

💬 お義父さん is still read (otōsan), just like "dad". The 義 only shows in writing that he's an in-law.

🇯🇵 Many people call their father-in-law お義父さん to his face, as if he were their own dad. Using his first name would sound oddly distant.

What Learners Are Saying

“Teaching in Osaka and I wanted to connect with my students beyond the classroom. The everyday conversation made my Japanese feel natural, not textbook-y.”

Mia S., 25, English Teacher

“I hop cities every few months and this is the only app that actually prepares me for living somewhere, not just visiting. Tokyo was the real test — passed with flying colors.”

James O., 28, Remote Worker

“I tried five different apps before this one. The roleplay conversations are what finally made things click. I actually remember what I learn now.”
