Lesson Roleplay

Imagine you're calling a Japanese restaurant. You want to book a private room for a business dinner with ten people.

o denwa arigatou gozai masu washoku jo sakura de gozai masu

Thank you for calling. This is Washokudokoro Sakura.

sumi mase n raishuu no kinyoubi no yoru juu nin de koshitsu o yoyaku shi tai n desu ga ai te i masu ka

Hello, I'd like to book a private room for ten people next Friday evening. Is one available?

moushiwake gozai mase n sono bi wa koshitsu ga umatsu te ori mashi te han koshitsu deshi tara go youi deki masu ga ikaga deshou ka

I'm very sorry, but our private rooms are fully booked that day. We could offer a semi-private area, though. Would that work for you?

han koshitsu to iu no wa mawari no seki to dono kurai shikira re te iru n deshou ka

How separated is the semi-private area from the other tables?

sudare to kabe de kugira re ta o seki desu no de mawari no hanashigoe wa sore hodo ki ni nara nai ka to omoi masu

It's sectioned off by bamboo blinds and walls, so you probably won't be bothered much by other diners' conversations.

Lesson Vocabulary & Phrases

🇯🇵🍽️🌸

washoku jo sakura

Japanese restaurant Sakura

💬 処 (dokoro) means "place for", and it often appears in restaurant names: 和食処 is a "Japanese-food place", and お食事処 (o-shokuji-dokoro) is a general "eatery".

☎️🍱🌸

washoku jo sakura de gozai masu

This is Washokudokoro Sakura.

💬 でございます is an extra-polite version of です "is". You'll hear it from staff answering the phone or greeting you, but you don't need to use it yourself.

🇯🇵 Restaurants in Japan answer the phone with their name, not with "hello". Hearing this tells you that you've reached the right place, so you can go straight to your request.

🚪🔒

個室

koshitsu

Private room

🇯🇵 Many izakaya and Japanese restaurants have private rooms, and groups often request one. Sometimes a room charge or a minimum group size applies, so it's worth asking.

See breakdown →
❓1️⃣✅

ai te i masu ka

Is one available?

💬 空いて is said (aite), from 空く "to become free", not 空 (sora) "sky". ていますか asks about a current state: "is it in a vacant state right now?"

See breakdown →
📅🈵

umatsu te iru

To be fully booked

💬 埋まる literally means "to be buried" or "filled in", so a fully booked room is pictured as "filled up". You'll often hear 満席 "all seats taken" for the same idea.

See breakdown →
🚪🔸

半個室

han koshitsu

Semi-private area

💬 半 "half" goes in front of a noun just like "semi-" does: 個室 "private room" becomes 半個室.

🇯🇵 A 半個室 usually has walls or a curtain on some sides but no full door, so neighbouring tables may still hear you. If you need real privacy for a group, ask specifically for a 個室 with a door.

🤔❓

ikaga deshou ka

How would that be?

💬 いかが is the polite version of どう "how". Staff use it when offering an alternative, and you can answer simply with それでお願いします "That, please".

See breakdown →
🚧

shikira reru

To be partitioned off

💬 The られる ending turns "to partition" into "to be partitioned". That's why restaurants describe their seating with this form: the space has been divided, but no one is named as doing it.

🎍🪟

簾

sudare

Bamboo blind

🇯🇵 Traditional restaurants often use a 簾 (sudare) to screen off a semi-private area. It blocks the view but not much sound.

What Learners Are Saying

“Teaching in Osaka and I wanted to connect with my students beyond the classroom. The everyday conversation made my Japanese feel natural, not textbook-y.”

Mia S., 25, English Teacher

“I hop cities every few months and this is the only app that actually prepares me for living somewhere, not just visiting. Tokyo was the real test — passed with flying colors.”

James O., 28, Remote Worker

“I tried five different apps before this one. The roleplay conversations are what finally made things click. I actually remember what I learn now.”
